Isabel M. Martinez
As an artist, she is interested in the phenomenological aspects of human experience. Perception is a recurring theme within her practice, and has become a foundation for her to explore the limits of photography; temporal and spatial relations are predominant subjects. She thinks of ways to challenge the conventions normally associated with the photographic medium, and this has led her to place experimentation and process at the forefront of much of her work. Non-linear narratives, simultaneity, and juxtapositions are often employed in the creation of her images. She seeks to make photographs that ask question which may not necessarily have answers, and that make one think about what photography is and what it could be.
She has exhibited in Chile, England and Canada. And has been included in FotoAmerica Bienal de Fotografia, selected twice for Magenta’s Flash Forward, and featured on Bank on Art, Frameworks, Ojo Zurdo, Chilenizacion de la Fotografia, Foro Latinoamericano de Fotografia Sao Paulo, and Wegway Magazine among others.
Isabel was curated into CONTACT Photography Festival 2011 with a featured solo exhibition at The Gladstone; as part of the festival, she also participated in a group exhibition at Twist Gallery. Later that year, her work was selected as a winner of Magenta’s Flash Forward. She currently lives and works in Toronto.
